Statement by L. Paul Bremer, Administrator, Coalition Provisional Authority

Baghdad, Iraq
September 20, 2003

We are shocked and saddened by this horrific and cowardly act against a colleague and a respected member of the Governing Council of Iraq. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Hashimi at this moment, along with her security staff and companions who were also injured. We wish them all a speedy and complete recovery. We applaud the courage of Mrs. Hashimi, and indeed all members of the Governing Council, as they forge the way towards a new, democratic Iraq. They will not be deterred. This senseless attack is not just against the person of Akila Al-Hashimi. It is an attack against the people of Iraq and against the common goals we share for the establishment of a fully democratic government. I, along with the entire Coalition Provisional Authority, stand in solidarity with Mrs. Hashimi and the Iraqi people.
