U.S. Army Troops Replace Marines in Baghdad

(Transition includes Civil-Military Operations Center) (170) The U.S. Army's 3rd Division has replaced elements of the 1st Marine Division in Baghdad, the U.S. Central Command announced April 20. The transition includes the Civil Military Operations Center, which has responsibilities in the areas of electricity, law enforcement, water and sanitation, and medical care. Following is the text of the Central Command news release: (begin text) NEWS RELEASE HEADQUARTERS UNITED STATES CENTRAL COMMAND MacDill Air Force Base, Florida April 20, 2003 CMOC AT PALESTINE HOTEL TURNED OVER TO ARMY'S 3ID BAGHDAD, Iraq -- 1st Marine Division elements in Baghdad were relieved by the Army's 3rd Infantry Division yesterday. Marines are moving to their new areas of operations in areas south of Baghdad. As part of the transition, the Marines have also turned over the Civil-Military Operations Center (CMOC) at the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad. The CMOC directed civil-military operations in four major functional areas, including electricity, law enforcement, water and sanitation, and medical care.
