Help Iraq for Love, Not for Profit

Delegations representing Western governments are presently meeting in the various capitals of the West to discuss the situation in Iraq after the war.

We hear that there are strong differences of opinion among the Westerners regarding the distribution of the booty from occupation — sorry, the liberation — of the Arab country.

These scenes remind me of what we see in wildlife documentaries: Large carnivores, after gorging themselves, leave the remains of their prey to the hyenas and vultures.

The blood of the Iraqis is not yet dry, but the scoundrels have begun buying and selling the country’s resources and properties without showing the least shame or hesitation.

It really seems that we are witnessing the death of shame!

Our print and electronic media, quoting economists, provide us with the glad tidings of the great investment opportunities which Gulf companies are likely to gain in occupied Iraq. The media also promise us not millions but billions of dollars, which we will make from Iraqi reconstruction contracts. We also hear about Gulf businessmen establishing contact with the American government to win contracts which the American companies may offer.

We say to these so-called experts: “Shame on you, and God will not bless you.”

We are sick of these people who try to make a profit, or even think of making money, from the tragedy of our brethren in Iraq.

Was our betrayal of them in their ordeal not enough?

We have to shun this immoral attitude, which has already led the world into an era of injustice and despotism, with the oppression of the weak by the powerful and the submission of people to the arrogant barbarism of tyrants.

All these things are done in the name of pragmatism or in the name of protecting the “national interest”.

Actually, they reflect only shameful greed, the love of the quick buck which overpowers the love of the spiritual hereafter. People are cowardly, and so easy targets for the powerful.

It is our duty to provide all possible assistance to our Iraqi brethren, free of charge, as a token — albeit late — of our support.

We extend them assistance not as bloodsuckers, but as their brothers who want to help the Iraqis rebuild their country to enable them to stand on their own feet once again.

We should also help them drive the Western colonialists out of their country.
