JEDDAH, 20 May 2003 — Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed yesterday urged Islamic organizations in the Kingdom and abroad to coordinate their efforts to spread the message of Islam and confront the smear campaigns against the religion and its followers.

Opening the 13th session of the coordination committee for Islamic work at the Muslim World League headquarters in Makkah, the governor also urged Islamic organizations to come up with novel ideas and programs to convey the message of Islam to more people around the world.

He commended the efforts made by the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the MWL in defending the Muslim nation and its culture. He reiterated the Kingdom’s support for joint Islamic work in cooperation with other Islamic countries.

In his address to the opening session, MWL Secretary-General Dr. Abdullah Al-Turki noted his organization’s efforts to confront the defamation campaign against Islam and Muslims and clarify Islam’s stand on terrorism, human rights, women’s issues and dialogue with other faiths.

“We have also sent a number of delegations to other countries to establish bridges of dialogue with religious, cultural and political leaders as well as academics and officials at research centers,” the MWL chief said.

The international conference organized by the league last year had set up a higher coordination authority for Islamic organizations and a world forum for Muslim scholars and thinkers, he said.

Dr. Al-Turki cautioned the participants about efforts to create divisions among Islamic governments and organizations to achieve their nefarious objectives.

“We have to make serious and joint efforts to solve our problems and draw up plans for them and not limit our endeavors merely to reactions,” he said.

Al-Turki said that deviant views, extremist religious thoughts and behavior and terrorist attitude were some of the main problems facing the Muslim nation.

“We have to treat all these diseases and exterminate them from our society,” the MWL chief said and offered his organization’s cooperation and expertise to achieve these goals.

Underlining the significance of coordination between Islamic organizations, he said it would help avoid the duplication of efforts, avoid wasting money and energy and achieve better results.
