News Staff RIYADH, 29 April 2003 — A number of Saudi experts in international
law have formed a team to defend the case of some 127 Saudi prisoners
held by the United States in Guantanamo. The team of lawyers headed by Ahmed Mazhar met in Riyadh on Saturday
to mobilize support from international human rights organizations. It is
scheduled to hold another meeting today to discuss the role of its
members. The team will highlight the “inhuman treatment” of the prisoners,
Mazhar said. He said such treatment went against international charters
and agreements, the US constitution and US policy on human rights. The team includes Dr. Mohammed ibn Omar Al-Madani Al-Idrisi, Saleh
ibn Abdul Aziz Al-Salim, Katib Al-Shammary and Khaled Fahd Al-Salim. “No existing laws or charters allow imprisonment of Saudi prisoners
in Guantanamo indefinitely without trial,” Mazhar told Arab News. He urged the US government and humanitarian agencies to cooperate
with the team’s efforts. “Being advocates of human rights, we hope,
the US government will consider our request favorably,” he added. Shammary, who has been pursuing the issue of Saudi prisoners for
several months, said the team had already contacted international human
rights organizations and American officials to release the prisoners. “We are ready to deal with any party who can serve the cause of the
prisoners,” he added. |
